Nexium Dosage
Nexium is delivered in dosage of 20 mg and 40 mg as delayed release tablets. For treating esophagitis in adults, the recommended daily dosage is 20 mg or 40 mg of Nexium during a period of 4 to 8 weeks (according to the exact prescription of the doctor). If the initial course does not provide the required effect, you may be prescribed with a repeated course. In order to maintain the results and control the symptoms over the long term, 20 mg of Nexium are prescribed for daily use.
For treating the symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) that is not accompanied by esophagitis, doctors usually prescribed 20 mg of Nexium to be taken once a day for a period of 4 weeks. If the results are not as expected, additional 4 weeks may be prescribed to better treat the condition.
For treating helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection that can influence the development of duodenal ulcer recurrence, doctors prescribe 40 mg of Nexium once a day, 1000 mg of amoxicillin twice a day and 500 mg of clarithromycin twice a day. However the dosage may be adjusted according to the particular situation.
Patients experiencing moderate hepatic impairment do not require dosage adjustment when taking Nexium. However, those who experience severe forms of this condition, require the daily dosage to not exceed 20 mg per day. If you have any questions, it is better to ask your doctor or pharmacist first.
Nexium should be taken orally at least an hour before having a meal, preferably around the same time every day in order to get the best effectiveness of the drug. However, your doctor may prescribe you otherwise depending on the situation.
Nexium tablets shouldn't be crushed, broken or chewed. The tablet should be swallowed whole. If it is hard for you to take the tablet whole, you can put the tablet into soft foods like applesauce or yogurt, still make sure that the food is not hot. You should chew the food with the tablet, swallow it whole. After doing so, drink a full glass of water in order to make sure that the drug is delivered properly. When taking the drug with food, take it immediately after putting the tablet into the food, do not leave it for later use.
In case you miss your dose of Nexium, you should take it as soon as remember. However, if it's already close to your next scheduled dose, you should skip the missed dose and carry on with the usual dosage schedule. Never take additional tablets to catch up with the amount used. Follow your doctor's prescriptions regarding the dosage.
In case you have taken too much Nexium and suspect an overdose, get in touch with the nearest medical emergency facility as soon as possible. Nexium overdose can be associated with such symptoms as confusion, abnormal sweating, drowsiness, vision problems, racing heartbeat.
Store the drug at room temperature, preferably in a closed container in a dark and dry place. Nexium shouldn't be stored in the bathroom.
